Dear colleagues in Bavaria and the State of São Paulo,

We, Abner de Siervo (Unicamp) and Hans-Peter Steinrück (FAU) have jointly submitted a BAYLAT / FAPESP application for two workshops on “Innovative routes to low-dimensional materials”.
Aim of the funding scheme is promoting young scientists and initiating or strengthening cooperation between Bavaria and the state of São Paulo in Brazil. The application has been approved. The two workshops will take place

1) April 20-25, 2026, in Campinas, Brazil
2) Fall 2027 in Erlangen

The two joint workshops are intended to promote the advancement of young researchers in São Paulo and Bavaria, with a focus on networking and gaining knowledge and experience in the international environment of cutting-edge research. Abner and I are supported by 4 mentors, Profs. Tulio Rocha/Sirius and Carlos Graeff/UNESP from São Paulo, as well as Profs. Barbara Lechner/TU Munich and Willi Auwärter/TU Munich).

The target group includes doctoral candidates who are about to complete their work as well as postdocs, habilitation candidates and junior professors (or recently appointed professors) up to 10 years after their doctorate. The language of the workshops is English. 18 people from each side should take part in each workshop (in total 2 PIs, 4 mentors and 30 junior researchers).

We invite you to nominate suitable candidates fitting the target group; they can be from your group (not more than 2) or from other groups, but also be already independent. Self-applications are possible.

Deadline for the nomination/application is Jan. 29, 2026, and we will inform the candidates until Feb 05, 2026.

Interested young researchers should send their application (informal email with short CV and link to their Google Scholar page) to hans-peter.steinrueck@fau.de (Bavaria) or asiervo@ifi.unicamp.br (São Paulo).

The selection will be made by us with the support of the mentors, based on the quality of the applicants (in terms of their scientific age) and a balanced distribution across the universities in São Paulo and Bavaria.

For BAVARIAN participants, we can provide up to 900 € for flights and conference fees, and free housing for the duration of the meeting at the University of Campinas.

For São Paulo participants, some local costs will be covered (including housing for those outside Campinas).

The conference fee is 50 Euros for PhD students and postdocs and 80 Euros for professors and PIs. It covers coffee breaks, excursions, and conference dinners.
