Magnetic antidots

Descrição: This project concerns the fabrication and characterization of ferromagnetic antidots arrays (composed by transition metal from the Iron group and their alloys) focusing on the dependence of the magnetic properties on the short and long range order, by controlling the symmetry of the array, the hole diameter, and the periodicity. To achieve such a goal, we will prepare magnetic antidot arrays by using three different routes: template assisted (anodized porous alumina) deposition of magnetic thin film; electron-beam lithography and nano-Focused Ion Beam lithography. Additional to the structural and morphological characterization, that will be done with the help of X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy and electronic microscopy techniques (SEM and TEM), a deep analysis on the magnetic properties will be performed using different characterization techniques: magnetometry, magneto-optical Kerr effect, Magnetic Force Microscopy and magneto-resistance. The results of all these measurements will be understood with the help of micromagnetic simulations, which are extremely useful for these systems. We hope that this cooperative work will open a route to tailor the magnetic properties of antidot arrays. Despite of the scientific interesting results, we strongly hope that this cooperation will reinforce the international collaboration among the various groups involved in this proposal..

Coupling effects in magnetic systems of reduced dimensionality (COEFmagNANO)

Descrição: The main objective of this program is to achieve a comprehensive knowledge of magnetically coupled systems of reduced dimensionality. Current lithography and production techniques allow the fabrication of magnetic elements with well controlled geometry and dimensions from few nanometers to micron sizes. These dimensions are comparable to some magnetic length scales, such as domain size, domain wall width, spin diffusion length, etc., thus new magnetic behaviours are expected as the material size approaches these physical length scales. Constraining effects have extensively been studied in ferromagnetic materials. Spin configurations only possible in such small elements, like single domain, vortex and onion states and head-to-head domain walls have been observed and explained by micromagnetic simulations. However, the spin arrangement of magnetically coupled nanostructures have barely been studied. Many competing parameters affect the final properties, which can strongly depend on temperature, magnetic anisotropies, coupling nature, crystalline structure, exchange interaction, interfacial roughness, geometry, stray field, etc. New properties can emerge from these systems as the dimensions of coupled magnetic elements are reduced, but some intrinsic properties observed in bulk and thin film materials can also disappear at nanometer scales; for example, exchange bias phenomenon is no longer preserved in certain materials as the volume of the element becomes too small. In this project a systematic study of coupling effects will be accomplished in patterned nanostructures with both in-plane and out-of-plane anisotropies. Three kinds of magnetically coupled systems will be investigated: antiferromagnetic / ferromagnetic (AF/FM), hard / soft materials and superconducting / ferromagnetic (SC/FM) bilayers. The present project frames into the European FP7th priority programme Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and New Production Technologies..
