Symposium for Early-career Particle Physicists

About the Event

The SYMEP² – Symposium for Early-career Particle Physicists – aims to bring together young researchers working in particle physics, astroparticle physics, and related areas, intended as a space for undergraduate, MSc, and PhD students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, to present their work, share ideas, and engage in discussions.

The program will consist of talks in a colloquium-style format with durations of approximately 15 to 30 minutes, as well as poster sessions during coffee breaks.

Location: Auditório Méson Pi, Departamento de Raios Cósmicos e Cronologia (DRCC), Instituto de Física Gleb Wataghin (IFGW), Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP).

Registration deadline: September 01

There is no registration fee.

SYMEP² aims to cover a broad range of topics in particle physics, astroparticle physics, and related areas. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Astroparticle Physics and Cosmology;
  • Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Quantum Computing in HEP;
  • Collider and Accelerator Physics;
  • Dark Matter;
  • Higgs, Electroweak, and Flavor Physics;
  • Neutrino Physics;
  • Particle Detectors, Instrumentation, and Novel Detection Techniques;
  • Physics Beyond the Standard Model;
  • Quantum Field Theory and related theoretical developments;
  • Software, Computing, and Computational Methods in Particle Physics;
  • Strong Interactions, Hadron Physics, and Heavy-Ion Physics;
  • Technology Applications, Education, and Outreach.

  • Presentations may be given in either Portuguese or English.
  • Typical talk duration: 15 to 30 minutes.

Registration

To register for the event, please fill out the Registration Form.

  • If you choose an oral or poster presentation in the registration form, a follow-up email will be sent with instructions for abstract submission and further details regarding your presentation.
  • Presentation acceptance may depend on the number of participants and the final program.

Venue

SYMEP² will take place at the Departamento de Raios Cósmicos e Cronologia (DRCC), IFGW/UNICAMP, on the UNICAMP campus in Campinas, São Paulo. The scientific talks will be held in the Auditório Méson Pi, located within the DRCC facilities.

Participants are advised to access the DRCC through the entrance on Rua Mendeleyev. While access to the building normally requires a UNICAMP ID card, the entrance will remain open during the event allowing free access for SYMEP² participants.

Accommodation and Useful Information

Participants coming from outside Campinas may find accommodation in the Barão Geraldo district, where the UNICAMP campus is located. The SYMEP² organization does not have partnerships or special arrangements with hotels, hostels, or other accommodation providers in the area. However, a variety of accommodation options at affordable rates can generally be found in Barão Geraldo through platforms such as Booking.com and Airbnb.

Meals

Several cafeterias and food outlets are available throughout the UNICAMP campus, offering affordable options for lunch, dinner, snacks, and drinks.

UNICAMP’s university restaurants (RUs) are not directly accessible to external visitors. Participants interested in having meals at the university restaurants should consult the Refeições para visitantes in advance for details on access and payment procedures.

In addition, the Barão Geraldo and Cidade Universitária areas surrounding the campus offer a wide variety of restaurants, cafés, and local meal services, with many affordable options to the academic community.

Is there a registration fee?

No. Registration and participation in SYMEP² are completely free of charge.

Who can participate?

SYMEP² is primarily intended for undergraduate, MSc, and PhD students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, working in particle physics, astroparticle physics, and related areas. Participants from different institutions and at different stages of their academic careers are welcome.

Do I need to present my work to participate?

No. Participants are welcome to attend the symposium without giving an oral or poster presentation. However, we encourage those interested to take the opportunity to present and discuss their work with other participants.

What research topics will be covered?

The final program will depend on the submitted contributions. The symposium welcomes contributions across a broad range of topics in particle physics, astroparticle physics, and related areas. Please refer to the About the Event section above for a more detailed list of topics.

When will the program be available?

The detailed program will be announced after registration closes on September 1, once the submitted contributions have been reviewed and the presentation schedule has been finalized.

Can I give my presentation in Portuguese?

Yes. Presentations may be given in either Portuguese or English.

Will certificates be provided?

Yes. Certificates will be issued to all registered participants and will indicate the type of participation: attendance, oral presentation, or poster presentation.

Are coffee breaks included?

Yes. Coffee breaks will be provided during the event at no additional cost to participants.
