Important Advice for Students

Within academia and research, there is often a subtle pressure to treat science and work as more important than any other aspect of life. In my view, this is entirely mistaken. However interesting, relevant, or fulfilling it may be, work in teaching, research, extension, and innovation remains just that: work is work.

Research consistently shows that human happiness is deeply tied to the quality and depth of our relationships with others. Nurturing these connections should be a primary focus in anyone’s life. Your true well-being does not depend on your grades, academic transcript, salary, publication record, or titles.

Therefore, I strongly encourage every student to view their academic journey as a professional endeavor—not something that should ever compromise their physical health, mental well-being, or relationships with loved ones. Give your best effort during reasonable working hours (around 8 hours a day, 5 days a week), and then go live your life. Remember: doing your best should never mean suffering.

Prioritize eating well, sleeping well, and cherishing your social connections. Your life is infinitely more important than your job.

Everyone is on their own unique journey; avoid self-critical comparisons with others. Progress at your own pace and define goals that truly make sense for you.

Finally, like it or not, many scientific discoveries occurred by sheer luck! Thus, living life and working with balance will always be the best decision.

A Reminder from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 24):

“Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.”

Never give up your fundamental rights!

Below are a few photos capturing moments that are precious to me. They have nothing to do with my academic work—and serve as a reminder of everything outside of work that brings meaning to my life.
